Your Country Needs You...Like It Needs A Kick Up The Arse!  
I'm a huge fan of Andrew Lloyd Webber - his musicals are, for the most part, works of genius but I'm filled with huge misgivings about this new show for Eurovision. The BBC producers have decided to go against decades of tradition and have only one song? What if it's crap? Some of Lloyd Webber's latest work hasn't really been up to scratch and I'm not convinced that a song written by someone who's music background is entrenched in musicals will actually be able to hit upon what is popular across Europe at the moment.

I also don't understand why we need to have yet another reality song contest on TV to find a singer either. We all know in our heart of hearts that this is nothing more than a way for Lloyd Webber to find some new blood to star in what will probably be yet another musical he's going to re-launch (I think Jesus Christ Superstar or Phantom is due for a re-release). I have absolutely no interest in picking the singer for a song, I'd much rather be picking the song. At least, then I can feel like it might be my fault if we don't do very well - which we won't, even with the new jury/phone voting setup.

Why, oh why, don't we go back to the older, simpler style of show we used to have between 1965 and 1974 which produced a lot of success for us (2 wins, 4 second places and smattering of top ten finishes) and was resurrected in 1992 which gave us another 2nd place with Michael Ball's 'One Step Out Of Time' and again a 2nd place in 1993 with Sonya's 'Better The Devil You Know'. For those of you unsure about how this system worked it was as follows: one performer was chosen by the BBC to perform a selection of songs written for the contest and then the best was chosen via postal votes in the Sixties and Seventies and by telephone voting in the Nineties.

Other systems have been used in the past with various degrees of success but the last couple of years have been infected by the insipidness of programs like X-Factor and Fame Academy with sing-offs and other programming ploys designed to bring in more viewers. The quality of the songs has also decreased with the rise of manufactured pop bands and manufactured songs. Overall it makes me feel very bleak about the future of the ESC in the UK. If this version of the selection process continues it also means that there is no stage for songwriters, such as myself, to enter the ESC.

And that's just a shame...
